SCULPTURE CAMPS

AGES 5 - 13

This week is all about thinking three-dimensionally! We’ll introduce young artists to a variety of sculpting materials (including non-ceramic clay) and sculpting techniques and explore some amazing work by professional artists. With individual guidance from the instructors, students will study the basics of form, texture and balance, learn to create compelling designs and strengthen their fine motor skills. Get ready to add some fun pieces to your family’s art collection

More about these camps...

At MUSEO Art Academy, we recognize the profound influence of art on developing young minds. Sculpture, as a hands-on artistic medium, plays a vital role in enhancing spatial awareness, fine motor skills, and imaginative thinking. It’s also a healthy way to manage anxiety and stress (source). MUSEO’s Sculpture Camps are designed to provide a fun experience that fosters these abilities and helps prepare children for a creative and enriching adulthood.

Sculpture: An Ancient Art with Modern Twists
Sculpture has been a significant art form throughout history, evolving from traditional representational forms to modern abstract creations. Our Sculpture Camps introduce campers to this diverse world, exposing them to various sculpting styles and materials, from wire and paper mâché to polymer clay and found objects.

Thinking in Three Dimensions
A core aspect of our Sculpture Camps is teaching campers to think 'in the round.' Unlike 2-D art forms like drawing or painting, sculpture demands attention to all angles. Our campers learn to meticulously craft each aspect of their work, ensuring a complete and cohesive piece viewable from any perspective.

The ability to conceptualize a 3D space also translates well to other art forms (such as drawing and painting) and even has applications in scientific disciplines (source). Learning sculpture can help children better understand the concept of depth and space in the world around them.

Art vs. Play: The Concept of Sculptural Presentation
An interesting discussion point in our camps has been the distinction between art and functional or playful objects. We create sculptures that may resemble toys, like colorful polymer clay animals, but emphasize their significance as art pieces. This concept introduces campers to the importance of presentation and the value of art.

Exploring Creative Sculptural Projects
While our projects vary each year, one highlight from a previous camp was the 'Chihuly-inspired Color Wheel'. Students learned about primary and secondary colors as they mixed dyes into liquid polyvinyl acetate rimmed with wire. Once dry, they shaped their work into a 3D form.

Sculpture Camps: A Journey of Tactile Creation
Sculpture Camps provide an adventure in creativity, perfect for children who love to explore and create with their hands. It's an opportunity to channel their energy into creating something unique and tangible.
