Working in low-fire clay and glazes, students will learn and experiment with multiple hand-building techniques (including slab, pinch pot, and coil forms) to create a variety of functional and abstract sculptural artwork.

These exciting classes bring the essential elements of our traditional drawing and painting classes into a newly combined experience in the digital realm on your computer or personal tablet. Utilizing a variety of apps, students will learn to use drawing tools, layers, and color palettes as they complete a wide assortment of lessons exploring composition, value, perspective, observation, photo realism, fantasy environments, character development and more!

Working in many types of drawing media, students will learn and develop a variety of fundamental, age-appropriate drawing processes to enable them to accurately draw what they see as well as develop their unique style over time. Through a series of step-by-step lessons, they’ll build their rendering skills and creative self-confidence. Subjects for lessons are selected to fit the personal interests of each class in order to keep projects fun and engaging for all ages and skill levels.

Students will have fun developing and refining their painting skills as they learn about the elements of visual art through applied design principles. Experimenting with a variety of painting materials, they’ll explore realism, impressionism, fauvism, surrealism, abstract expressionism and more.

Cartoons are drawings done in non-realistic (or semi-realistic) styles. Comics organize cartoons into panels to narrate a story. Manga is a very popular Japanese style of cartoons and comics which we explore in these classes along with a variety of other Asian, American, and European styles. Student learn a variety of sketching, inking, and layout techniques. The lessons include character development, facial expressions, poses, environments, and various storytelling layouts. Based heavily on student input and interests, the lessons are fun, engaging, and customizable (simplified for beginners while also providing layers of complexity for more experienced students).

Utilizing art elements and design principles effectively, students dive deep into a new art movement each month. Inspired by the characteristics unique to each movement, they explore a variety of materials and techniques as they develop their own creative style and confidence.
